Title : Monster Building

Description : Montane Mansion consists of five connecting buildings, namely Oceanic Mansion, Fook Cheong Building,

Montane Mansion, Yick Cheong Building and Yick Fat Building, which form an E-shaped architecture complex. This giant architecture on King’s Road resembles a monster and is thus called the “Monster Building” by the locals.

Built in the 1960s, it is one of many public housing developments owned by the government, providing heavily subsidised accommodation for the city’s low-income residents. The Monster Building is typical of public housing towers built in this era: the apartments are small and densely packed, while the pragmatic architecture reflects the utilitarian austerity of postwar Hong Kong.

Time and location : Quarry Bay, Hong Kong. February 2019
